Nach einer neuen Studie der Universität of Texas at Arlington sind erhöhte Werte von Arsen und anderen Schwermetallen in der Nähe von Erdgas Abbaustätten im Barnett Shale gefunden worden. Arsen, Barium, Strontium und Selen kommen in der Natur in geringen Mengen im Grundwasser vor, aber Fracking steht schon länger im Verdacht durch Ausspülen der Gesteinsschichten, diese giftigen und krebserregenden Stoffe mit ins Grundwasser zu fördern. Interessant ist, dass Insgesamt 100 Brunnen untersucht wurden, erhöhte Werte gab es nur in der Nähe von aktiven Bohrplätzen. Zudem ist den Forschern aufgefallen, dass in 29 Brunnen zusätzlich Methanol vorgefunden wurde. Auch hier wurden die höchsten Konzentrationen im Bereich von fracking-bohrstellen vorgefunden!!!! Zugleich betonen die Forscher:
„Diese Studie allein kann nicht abschließend die genauen Ursachen ermitteln, aber sie bietet ein starkes Argument für weitere Forschungen,“
Researchers at the University of Texas at Arlington say there are elevated levels of arsenic and other heavy metals close to natural gas extraction sites in the Barnett Shale area of North Texas, according to a news release from the school Friday.Several scenarios — including disturbances from fracking, lower water tables from drought, removal of water used for fracking or industrial accidents such as faulty gas well casings — could release the dangerous compounds into shallow groundwater.“This study alone cant conclusively identify the exact causes of elevated levels of contaminants in areas near natural gas drilling, but it does provide a powerful argument for continued research,“ Brian Fontenot, the lead author on the new paper, said.Arsenic, barium, strontium and selenium occur naturally at low levels in groundwater.
